One Room Challenge Week 5/6
The last two weeks have been pretty substantial and transformative in more ways than one. As far as our home goes we have been busy tiling and wallpapering. I’m getting a solid glimpse of what the final result will be and feeling good about it.
As usual I will let the images do most of the talking as we go through this step by step:
The tiles we used for this project came from our sponsor The Tile Shop and we selected an army green subway tile for the majority of the kitchen.
We chose the corner as the starting point for tiling because I wanted a full tile in that area since it’s the first thing you notice when you walk into the kitchen. The wood board is attached to the wall to act as a guide for a straight line.
All of the whole tiles were placed first, we saved the pieces that needed to be cut for last.
The shelving was built out of 2x4’s similar to our living room. They were secured to stud in the wall, clad in ply board and then hardi board.
We wanted a narrower shelf for above the stove so we used these metal brackets to support the shelf. Also, it may not be too obvious but we selected a lighter tile for behind the stove, Highland. This area is a bit darker and by using a tile one shade lighter it helped to brighten up the space.
We used a black grout from The Tile Shop.
Next up was the wallpaper. I chose this gorgeous grasscloth from Pacific Designs. From what I read online hanging grasscloth can be very difficult but I wasn’t about to let that scare me away from trying and I’m glad I did it because it truly wasn’t hard! I found it to be very forgiving and apart from having to change the razor blade EVERY time you cut the paper it wasn’t much different from hanging other papers. Instead of painting the wall behind the paper a light color I used a tiny paintbrush and beige paint to fill in any tiny gaps in the seams or near the ceiling (maybe not the most professional move but little things like that don’t bug me)
We used Roman pro 880 and rolled the glue on to the wall then placed the paper.
Another little detail you may notice are these rattan sconces from Hudson valley lighting (White glass diffusers not on in this photo) I love the warm organic element they add to the space!
Thanks for checking in and don’t forget to go see what the other 19 designers are up to!
