Guest Room Mural

Sometimes the best option for changing up a room without spending a ton of money is using paint to transform the space. You don’t have to paint the whole room or even a whole wall, color blocking or adding just a few shapes is easy and makes a huge impact.

First step is coming up with a design. I like to sketch up different ideas on the computer first. Pick three or four shapes and try combining them in different ways. Don’t be afraid to paint over things like doors or trim, that adds to the dimension and interest of the piece.

Next, once you’ve settled on a design, draw your shapes onto the wall with a pencil. For straight lines use a level to make sure everything is straight. For circles or arches use the nail and string trick (I’ve made a video showing how it’s done step by step)

Now select colors for the shapes. I find that sometimes the best inspiration for color can be found in art. For example, I used this Picasso artwork as the starting point for my color selection. The colors I selected for my mural are: Elegant Charcoal, Sahara Desert Sand, Warm Caramel and Granite Grey.

Lastly, paint in the shapes. I used ColorPlace paint which can be found at Walmart and a 2” angled brush.

The final result is a large scale custom piece of art that you can be proud of. Since we are spending so much time in our homes right now it’s so important to make sure that we are excited to be in our spaces.
